A small shopping street pub, which can often be a hint that it's a bit rough or that there's no real ale. But inn fact the opposite is true in this case, because as well as being friendly this pub is smartly presented and serves excellent real ale. It was our first pub of the day on a mission to drink Draught Bass in as many Stoke on Trent pubs as we could. As luck would have it, we got the best Bass of the day here at the first pub, and spent the whole day saying, "yes, but not as good as the Unicorn".

This is a single room pub with a tiny snug tucked on at the back. The bar is on the right, with five hand pumps, including a cider. Although we looked no further than the Bass, London Pride and St Austell Tribute were the other beers available. The young woman running the place was full of enthusiasm and knowledge, and we had a great start to our day out in Stoke.

A charming ,small town centre boozer with a good interior.Around the walls there is bench seating covered in red velour, various polished brass ephemera hang from the ceiling and small brewery mirrors decorate the walls. It's all very traditional with some wood panelling,a wooden faced bar and a one table rear snug. There is a small coutyard beyond the Ladies with a few benches while to the front there are more tables in the pedestrianised road.
There was a very friendly welcome from the landlady and the five handpumps were offering a real cider,Fuller's London Pride and Hophead,Bass and Adnam's Ghost Ship in terrific nick.Clearly cellar skills are high here, and it was interesting as a southerner to see so many southern beers on offer, which may well interest the locals more than someone like me.
Given the ale quality and the charm ,it's worth including this pub on any crawl around Hanley.

As noted below this is a small pub consisting of a long narrow room with the bar on the right. It's carpeted and has benches with low tables and stools. There was music playing but I couldn't see any TVs.
The bar has five hand pumps which had a cider, Oakham Citra, Bass, London Pride and Pedigree. I went for the Oakham Citra which was in very good nick. I forgot to note the price but it was three pound something.
I thought this was a decent and cosy little pub with a friendly barmaid. If the Citra is a regular fixture then it's well worth a visit.
