The Congress Inn has a strange layout with an entrance that opens into a corridor that runs halfway up the pub to a wall where lots of real cider boxes are stacked on a couple of tables. To the right, in the right rear of the pub, is a carpeted room with seating around the walls that face a dartboard centrally located on the rear wall. To the left of the cider boxes is the bar area where the serving counter is found up the right-hand wall at the front of the pub where it faces tables and banquettes up the left. At the rear are more tables, a skittles table and another dartboard that is found on the rear wall. On the bar I counted seven hand pumps, three of which were in use drawing Bass, Fine Ales’ Jarl and Castle Rock’s By Starlight. There were sandwiches and sausage rolls on tables at the rear under the dartboard and the pub was busy for a midweek afternoon, so I think I stumble upon a second wake of the day, although it didn’t feel very sombre so maybe something else was going on. I thought the service was friendly and the Bass was decent, so I’d visit here again.

A respectable corner back street pub, with two large rooms. The bar and lounge found on the right hand side of the entrance and good sized darts room on the back left. The entrance also has a fine example of Victorian floor tiling. Nine handpumps on the bar, with eight in operation on our visit. Three of these were from Castle Rock, which seemed popular with the locals. We went for the Millstone True Grit, which was in good condition and reasonably priced. The landlady was very jolly and welcoming, there was some music playing at a low level, Pink Floyd comes to mind. This pub had a good relaxed atmosphere and also has a rear patio garden.

This is my local. 9 real ales, 4 of which remain constant. The other 5 guests come from breweries far and wide. A proper traditional boozer with a good range of ales. No food is sold except for bar snacks and not really a place for children, I did ask if I could take my youngest daughter and they were fine with it. Well worth a visit if you like good beer.
