Wonderful unspoilt classic pub layout with conversation flowing in each of the small rooms. The downside is that the beers are all from whatever is left of the Marstons group, my Banks Amber was superbly well kept though. An unmissable pub if you’re in Shrewsbury.

This was another of Shrewsbury’s pubs that I visited twice during my visit to the town, initially on the Thursday evening, and then again the afternoon of the following day for the official Pubs Galore crawl and this was definitely one of my favourites in town. A splendid period multi roomed heritage interior as well described below, a slightly scary barmaid (same one on both occasions), very chatty locals and some very well kept Marston Ales.
On Thursday evening with the good lady after getting our beer in the bar parlour she chose us to sit in the period smoke room (Men only until 1975) because she could, although she still was the only female in this room, before moving on to the Poets room. But we never made it all the way round to the lounge. From these side rooms you can order beers ( and the advertised crusty rolls for £2) through the small serving hatch into the bar parlour
Yes, it’s a Marston’s House and the stables Sweet Chariot, Sneck Lifter, Wainrights, Oxford Gold, Marston Pedigree and Banks Amber were on during our visits and the couple we tried were in very good nick, especially the Banks Amber which was very good indeed. If all Marston’s pubs kept their beer this well I wouldn’t have to walk straight past so many.

This is every bit the heritage pub that you'd expect to find in Shrewsbury, with a multi-roomed format.
As described below, but unfortunately I didn't get round to buying a drink and staying a little longer, which was a pity.
