Walking across the Quarry park to Porthill Suspension Bridge it seemed obvious that the major draw of the Boathouse is the riverside location and bankside decking. The entrance around the front of the pub leads to a wooden floored interior where there’s a small seating area to the right and a small bar area to the left where a serving counter faces a couple of high tables along the rear wall. Premium keg was available alongside Alpacalypse, and five of the six hand pumps were in use drawing Salopian’s Oracle, Oakham’s Midnight Mild and Inferno, Butty Back and Purple Moose Brewery’s Madog’s Ale. The left-hand side of the pub is an L-shaped dining area with open plan seating and a fireplace on the right-hand wall where there’s also a door to the beer garden where stairs descend into large patio and decked seating areas. Music from the likes of Oasis was being piped into the garden from the pub. This is a great spot for a beer on a sunny afternoon and evening, but the pub itself feels more like a restaurant with a small holding bar, so I’d probably avoid on an inclement day, unless of course I’m going to use the restaurant side.
