Plain brick, yet attractive, country pub with rear garden. The main room is described below - we went into the snug which had a TV (not on), dart board and some old prints on the walls. There was no music and while it did food, we didn't eat. The service was friendly and it seemed a maturer clientele. 3 real ales: Hobson's Town Crier, a very nice Hobson's Bitter and a guest that was a decent AJ's Best. A really pleasant place and would return.

Now known by the combined names of the Dog and Davenport Arms, with a pub sign depicting a greyhound and nearby Davenport House. A framed history of the pub can be found on a wall near the entrance - neither the landlady nor a regular customer that I spoke to were familiar with this well-documented history, according to which the former butchers referred to below became a beer house and closed, while the Greyhound Inn became the present pub.
The room to the left on entering is labelled the snug, while the main room has two parts, with the further part having some booth seating and some tables, the part near the bar having an inglenook fireplace (with wood-burning stove) and a large and handsome oval table. The bar itself is fairly small, with three hand pumps featuring Hobsons Best and Town Crier, plus Wood's Born & Bred; I had a half of the latter but wasn't impressed - just a tad too much lemon juice about it for my taste, though its condition could not be faulted. It was fairly quiet when I was here at lunchtime midweek, but it struck me as the sort of pub that would improve on further acquaintance.

Oggwyn Great left this review about The Dog
Converted from a butchers in the 19th century the Dog is a traditional two room country pub with low ceilings and wood burning fires .
2 ales on , Hobsons Bitter and a decent Twisted Spire .
A decent pub with good service .
A change of landlord was about to take place a few days after my visit .
