Brakspear wants to convert the Rose and Crown, which is Grade II listed and the only remaining pub in New Street, into a six-bedroom home.
The company shut the pub in September, saying it was no longer viable. But members of the town council’s planning committee claim the business should be able to turn a profit and are to ask South Oxfordshire District Council to designate the pub an asset of community importance.
If they are successful, Brakspear will only be allowed to sell the property to the community during its first six months on the market.
The scheme was introduced in the 2011 Localism Act to give local bidders enough time to raise the money to buy it.

A decent, if perhaps uninspiring from a drinking perspective, upmarket Henley pub. It's a foody, dim-candlelight sort of place in the evening. My Brakspear Bitter (the only ale) was decent, no complaints. There's better in Henley for a beer but it's decent for what it is.

It was just starting to rain as we entered the pub. This soon became a violent thunderstorm. There were 3 handpumps on the bar but only the Brakspears Bitter was actually available. The pub is very small but perfectly formed and had a very fishy menu. We didn't eat here but the 3 people on the next table all had fish, chips and peas. To be honest, it looked like frozen chips to us, which looked a bit disappointing, however they all had good sized portions. Another decent pint in pleasant surroundings
