A decent swerve off the busy A420, the interior is a cosy mixture of exposed brick, carpet and new-flagstoned floor. The bar is wedge-shaped and faces you upon entry with a separate room to the left replete with tables and chairs - a mixture of people drinking and dining. A central fireplace forward and to the right of the bar splits the main room into a further section, with an extended area further back to the right (conservatory-like and not in keeping with the ambience of the main building). Ale selection was spot-on, with an eclectic selection of three - Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Ramsbury Deerstalker and Loose Cannon Gunner's Gold (the names and ABVs were chalked onto squares of slate affixed to each pump). Friendly service, inobtrusive background music, convivial locals, dried hops above the bar, ready-chopped logs for the fire were further boons, and gave an overwhelming feeling of a balance got just right. A further chalked piece of slate by the fireplace proclaimed they had won "Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards 'Best Traditional Pub'" (albeit in 2014). Worth a punt.

The King and Queen is an 18th Century village pub just off the Swindon-Oxford road near Shrivenham, supposedly built to accommodate the navvies digging the nearby Avon and Kennet Canal. It is now a thriving community local and venue for real ale fans (it's a GBG regular and a noted CAMRA venue), and there is an active boules team. It has a very wholesome restaurant-style menu (although there is just the one bar, the food is a cut above the usual bar food) which makes use of a lot of local farm produce. The landlord was very welcoming and good company. The traditionally styled interior has been tastefully decorated. I had a pint of Brakspears Oxford Gold, a superb pint perfectly kept and most enjoyable. A nice country pub in an excellent setting, although a little pricey. Definitely worth leavign the main road to find for lunch, beer or an enjoyable evening out.
