An attractive and traditional looking pub located a short stroll away from the main High Street, but very handy if you’re visiting the Minster, this has something of a food focus with a desk just inside the door to check people in, but you could nonetheless approach the bar and the smaller section to the right did not appear to have any reserved tables. Stained glass in the window is inscribed with Smoke Room and Tap Room, although these days it has all been opened out in to one single room.
Décor wise it’s quite traditional with plenty of black beams on the ceiling with the right hand drinking half perhaps feeling a little more bar like with wood strip on the floor and a TV in the corner showing a news channel, although the volume was off so this was not too intrusive. The left hand eating area was carpeted and had a few pictures of the locale dotted around the walls, including the Minster. Walling was predominantly plain plasterwork, although there was patterned wallpaper in places and exposed brick fireplaces at either end, whilst the seating was a mixture of fitted sofas around some of the perimeter, and regular tables and chairs elsewhere. The food menu offered a decent looking selection of pub grub dishes although we found the food to be a bit hit and miss, with the lasagne being extremely bland.
Beers on tap were Elgood’s Blackberry Porter, Blue Monkey Infinity, Castle Rock Preservation and Everard’s Sunchaser and Tiger. Ciders meanwhile were well represented with Aspall’s, Rosie’s Pig, Lilley’s Mango, Friels, Tipsy Marion Sting, Celtic Marches Tutti Frutti and Broadoak Moonshine.

Really a restaurant masquerading as a pub, four or five tables to one side can be used by drinkers but on the other hand might be reserved. Eight pulls of Everards and others in decent nick but the service isn’t on the ball.

Yet another great pub in a village blessed with many if the Heraty Gooofellow, an Everards tied house on one of the main road a five minute walk from the main high street. the inside is tastefully decorated and keeps an old school vibe without being old or shabby, it is a very warm and comforting place to be especially in winter with its low beams and ceilings, food is also very good quality and home made here. The bar lines the back wall as you enter and has eight hand pumps with two dedicated to ciders (mango and apple n blackcurrant). the rest left Everards Tiger as a permanent beer being an Everards house with the rest being ever changing guests which included St Austill proper job at £3.70 but this was off at our time of visit. Wellbeck Abbey hearty Blonde and another of their monthly specials as well as Castle Rocks Elsie Mo and Brian Clough, a well kept fruity pale ale coming in at average for the area £3.40. There is also a very impressive beer garden with children's play area and lots of tables with large umbrellas perfect for sitting in and enjoying the sun as we did mid August. One of the many gems in Southwell and definitely worth the effort to visit if around the area.
