The Waggon and Horses is a detached old looking pub at the side of the busy Mansfield road in the red Hill area of Arnold. It stands directly next to the much larger Ram but wins outright on style as it is not covered in horrendous white rendering. As you enter you are faced with a bar and two main rooms to the right and left that have had their separate entrances widened and knocked trough but they still retain some parting walls that keep them at least a little distinct. The pub has a very traditional feel and is much more old fashioned and original than the corporate ram next door. It still has some original oak beams and although refurbished over the years it has kept the same distinct traditional style that I commend. Although I believe they do have a food offering but this is not a mainstay of the pub as this is much more of a drinker’s pub with meals being offered at certain times/Sunday lunches which Is how I think things should be. On the bar were five real ales and these consisted of Wells Bombadier (£3.40) Wadsworth Dirty Rucker (£3.20) Wells Burning Gold (£3.20) Blue Mon key BG Sips (£2.90) and Kings Clipstone Royal Stag (£2.90). My pint of the Wadworth was pretty good and kept in a nice condition and at an acceptable price and this is what this place is., a very decent respectable pub with respectable beer at respectable prices. Yes it wasn’t the most exciting choice in the World and it was rather quiet on my visit but all things considered I had an enjoyable time in here and would call again if in the area as opposed to going in the ram. This is a proper traditional no thrills drinkers pub were a decent (if sometimes a little unimaginative) pint can always be had without the smell of burnt chicken or screaming children. I would visit again.

The Waggon and Horses used to be an Home Ales tied house when i first went in here in the early 80s.
The pub has been opened out but still has different areas that are still like a bar or lounge there wer four pumps on the bar which were Bombadier,Sharpes Doom Bar,Deuchars IPA and a Wadworth seasonal beer called Horizon.
