The Travers Rest is a large roadside pub owned by Greene King and comes under their Chef and Brewery guise. A large imposing building surrounded by the countryside this is very much a food led pub and is not the sort of place to come just for drinks, especially as there are no houses in walking distance. The pub has been extensively refurbished over the years but still retains a warm cosy feel although it is a bit airy and modern for my liking but at least it is not overly tacky. I didn’t get a look around the whole pub as we came for food but all the tables I could see were reserved for diners so the availability of room solely for drinkers will be very limited, something that deeply annoys me. I didn’t get chance go to the bar as it was waitress service but there were four real ales on offer and thankfully the Greene King offering was limited to just a single offering of London glory. The other beers available were Courage Directors and two local beer in the form of Shipstons Gold Star and Home Ales robin hood pale ale. I opted for the home ales pale ale at a reasonable £3.20 to say we were in a foody pub that is slightly on the pretentious side and must admit to it being in a superb condition. It really was well kept and went down a treat. The food I had I was not very impressed with but the beer made up for things. Really not the sort of place to come for drinks but if ever around or visiting Mellish Rugby club across the road then you will be able to get a nice pint here but you wouldn’t want to stay for many. It served its purpose fairly well and although not my sort of place when coming out for a bite to eat this is better than most bog standard pub grub type outlets.
