Pretty much as described by Blackthorn, below, this traditional town pub seemed a bit chaotic at first, but it turned out to be a friendly local with a bit of an emphasis on younger, less mainstream locals and the more extrovert students. Indeed, they offer discount to students but not to CAMRA members. The TV was mute, the gap in the soundscape filled with modern soft rock music. Ales on were Wickwar Bob and Hop Union Whakapapa, both in good condition. Real ciders were Harry’s Haymaker and Scrummage. Also available were Neck Oil and Gamma Ray from Beavertown, Moretti, Murphy’s, Orchard Thieves, Amstel, Heineken, Guinness and Brixton Coldharbour. Well worth a visit for their ale, and I’d include in a crawl.

A neighbourhood local that is now owned by Wickwar Brewery, I had heard that this had had something of a refurbishment recently, although in practise, other than perhaps a lick of paint I’m not sure what it consisted of. This is a pub that I really want to like, but always end up being disappointed by it, not least on this occasion by the barman who couldn’t be bothered to greet us but just carried on singing along to the rather too loud jukebox whilst waiting for us to order.
At one time there was a very tiny little snug just inside the door, but this has now been opened out so it’s all one single room, although divided in to a couple of different areas. There are sanded wooden boards on the floor and cream painted wood panelling on the lower part of the walls with painted wallpaper above. Seating is a mixture of benches around the perimeter and tables and chairs. A snug area at the rear is perhaps a little cosier by virtue of it’s size, but is much the same in terms of décor. Various rugby paraphernalia was on the walls such as signed shirts and team photographs, and a notice said that they were showing all the Six Nations matches. A plasma screen was in the rear to facilitate this. There was also a cricket bat mounted on the wall and an old fire place was off to one side, but all it contained was an electric log effect heater. A quick glance at the menu showed that they offer a selection of the local Pie Minister pies, either at £4.99 on their own or £6.49 with mash and gravy.
Beers on tap were all from the Wickwar stable with their Falling Star, Try Time and Bob. Ciders were well represented though with Thatcher’s Gold, Symonds Founders Reserve, Strongbow Cloudy Apple, Thatcher’s Traditional and Cheddar Valley, the latter two being served from boxes racked up at the end of the bar. Prices though were quite frankly ridiculous, with a pint of the Gold and a Gin & Tonic coming in at £8.95, and for that you didn’t even get a slice in the G&T. There are far better pubs just a very short walk away, so I can see little reason to return here.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Cotham Porter Stores
Compact local boozer round the back of the university, comprising two small refurbished rooms. The front bar and rear seating area are separated by a large drawing in blackboard paint supposedly done by John Lennon in 1963. Apart from that, this is now a Wickwar house, with the regular Bob (£3.20) supplemented by Falling Star and the seasonal A Christmas Tall Tale.
