I did indeed return! It remains a fairly scruffy(ier) Rock pub and was full of bar blockers on my late afternoon visit. Fairly monotonous black and white interior though it is * rated on the CAMRA Inventory. Eight ales on over two sets, my first two were cloudy and minging but we just about got there in the end with a Castle Rock Pale (NBSS 2.5). I wouldn’t bother with here again; the cask quality is dire. The local CAMRAs have kept it out of The Book as well.

A rock and ale pub, which made for a nice change from the other places I did in Nottingham on my crawl. A bit of character here (if somewhat shabby); two snug rooms and a main bar connected by a winding corridor, the names of which (Charles and Cromwell) evoke Nottingham’s role in the Civil War (the pub was apparently used as a recruiting station). Six ales available on my visit, with the bar touting a good selection of local micros. There’s also some ciders and interesting bottled garb. 20p off for CAMRA members too. An agreeably alternative music selection was being played and a few of the punters fitted right into the theme. The pub is apparently built on Saxon-era caves if the diagram on the wall is to be believed. I liked this one and will be returning next time I’m in Nottingham. Rated 8

Rockers pub on a busy main road heading towards the railway station. It was fairly busy on our Saturday evening visit. It's possible that they were preparing for some live music later in the evening. Although I didn't notice anything advertised.
Handpulls are spread across two banks and have a good selection of ales. Regular beers are Castle Rock Harvest Gold, Sharp's Doom Bar, Robinson's Trooper, Adnams Ghost Ship & Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold. Guest beers were Castle Rock Screech Owl & Elsie Mo & Titanic Plum Porter & Raspberry Pale. I also happened to noticed a couple of boxed ciders at the back of the bar - Weston's Rosie's Pig & Lilley's Chocolate Apple. A CAMRA discount is mentioned on WhatPub, but I didn't see it actively promoted, perhaps as Ian Mapp says it's because it hasn't featured in the Good Beer Guide since 2013.
I quite liked this pub. Despite its grungy atmosphere, it apparently has quite a lot of history to it.

Did all a lot of pubs in Nottingham - and most of the Good Beer Guide 2021 entries. This was the pick of the lot, even if Notts Camra dont feel fit to sing its praises.
The Ghost Ship was one of five or six hand pulls on and was in that good condition that I didn't veer away from it.
Subjectively a "rock pub" - the music is loud but powered from the jukebox, so it all depends on who is in.
And who is likely to be in? Everyone from Students to hard drinkers who know its one of the few traditional pubs open after 11pm.
Loved it.
