My previous visit here was before I started doing pub reviews, and I have somehow never found myself again in this part of town when the pub was open - as has been pointed out, it's a bit of a walk from the city centre pubs, though there are frequent buses climbing that hill. The pub seemed very much as it was 15 years or so ago (though I remember it as a Batemans pub), with a no-nonsense bare boards alehouse style. I counted nine real ales and three ciders on the bar. I went for Newby Wyke Orsino and Marble Mild, both of which were in very good condition. I must come back some time when other pubs on Mansfield Road are also open; on this occasion I managed to get a drink in the Six Barrel at the bottom of the hill, but it was a Tuesday so the Rose of England wasn't open, and the Golden Fleece, despite having lights on inside was also not open at the time we were here (it's open at 3pm weekdays, likewise the Hole in the Wall, whereas the Poacher opens at midday).

This pub should never be described as Nottingham Central,it's a punishing uphill walk for at least 20 minutes, easier on the way down.
A very tradtional Castle Rock pub, with a solid boozer atmosphere and a cosy, authentic interior. To the left of the entrance is a bar room in two sections each with handpumps and it's own servery. There is lot of old brewery ephemera ,some metal advertising signs and a Wrigley chewing gum dispenser.Bench seating with some stools.Walking around the interior there is a small back corridor lounge while french windows lead to a long and winding beer garden.
On my trip the Castle Rock beers were Elsie Mo,Sherwood Stout,Harvest Pale and SIPA Simcoe while the guests were Burton Bridge Bitter,Nene Valley Hop Stash,Newby Wyke Orinso and Little Lights Turtles Have Short Legs,a very decent hazelnut MILD (NBSS 4).
Along with the VAT & Fiddle, these are the two Castle Rock pubs worth a visit when in the city, but watch out for the long hike here. The willingness the serve several guests is a big positive. Not too far from the Organ Grinder, which would still be my prefered option in this higher part of the city.

Located on the north of the city, a Castle Rock pub in ale house style. Multi roomed in tongue & groove with grubby cream above. Nine pulls with obviously Castle Rock beers predominating but a reasonable clutch of other breweries such as Black Iris, North Riding, and Shipstones. Madly large selection of Scotch whiskys. Lively, friendly atmosphere with a decent mixed bunch of locals. Only two staff on so they struggled (very well) with table service in a busy pub, otherwise all was running well.
