Large place recently redecorated in a similar manner to Manvers but with more taste and restraint. Much better ale here as well in terms of range (five over seven) and quality - a super Batemans XB (NBSS 4.5) - alongside friendly staff. Soundtrack anchored in 1996 which suited me. Should have found room for another pint, really. I’d absolutely make an effort to check this one out again should I be going past Radcliffe BR. 7.5

A handsome roadside pub on the western edge of Radcliffe. An impressive seven hand pumps on the facing edge of the bar counter (see photo), Bateman's XB centrally placed and very good (NBSS 4, £5/pint). Beers are listed on a video screen behind the bar. This is a good community pub, with food for those who want it, and well kept beer for those who don't.

The Chestnut is from the outside a very solid traditional looking pub and the first port of call for us alighting from the bus as we entered Radcliffe. The inside has had a large refurbishment and comparing it to older photos shows its been modernised a fair bit. The pub retains a lot of original features and an open wood fire but has lost some of its traditional country pub vibe and is now airier and more contemporary. The pub is in two main sections, the main bar with bench and table seating as well as a raised level back room that looked exclusively for diners as the pub is now quite gastro.
Beer wise I was rather impressed with the selection of well-chosen beers from a more unusual stable of breweries for an out of town village pub. On my visit I was presented with the choice of Marble Brewery Manchester Bitter (£3.70) Adnams Mosaic (£3.60) Woodfords Werry (£3.60) Adnams Broadside (£3.80) Why Valley Butty Bach (£3.70) Buxton More Top (£3.70) and Marble Lagonda IPA (3.90). We went for pints of the Buxton and Marble Bitters which were both competently kept and quite enjoyable if not spectacular. It was noticeable that the near hour we were there Saturday afternoon only two other customers ordered real ale which does make me wonder how they manage to get through such an extensive line-up.

Overall a really decent boozer and by far the best beer selection in the village I would come back here if ever visiting Radcliffe again a 7.5.
