Dark and foreboding place both inside and out. You have to burrow right in, past the smell of damp and piss, up steps at the rear, to get to the bar which smells of rotting salad. Modern dark ambient music at odds with the half a dozen 50+ aged punters. GBG listed with four on, my Lenton Lane Twist & Stout was good (NBSS 3.5) though came in a chunky glass, sigh. Cobs, but dry and disappointing at £3 a pop. Newspapers. I can see why this is technical GBG but it’s not likely to entice me again unless they give it a damn good airing.

This is a pub I had not previously been aware of, and said as much to the young man behind the bar. He said he'd had the same thought when he got the job, but he's had customers come in saying it was a punk rock venue (50 years ago?) and possibly even hippies before that.

Four cask beers on - this pub is in the current GBG - and nothing like the pedestrian range described in the review from six years ago; I went for the local Black Pheasant rather than the pale Avocet from Exeter. There was a hint of decay about my beer (NBSS 2, £4.70/pint), which was a shame because this is an interesting and welcoming place, unusual for a city centre, and worth a visit.

Town centre pub with a standard range of ales including Citra, Adnams Broadside, Harvest Pale and Titanic Plum Porter. The Pale was ok. it might not be the most exciting choice of beers but at least it is a choice! I would call again.
