Scruffy looking place. Multiple rooms but all very basic and cheap with scuffed laminate flooring, mushroom shade paint and stark lighting along with no heating on a dank day. Of interest were the tables in the main bar which were engraved with a pic of Stevenson’s Rocket. Overheard complaints about the food by a family who then proceeded to leave most of the replacement. GBG listed with four on from an interesting stock. My Woodfordes Albion Stout was fair (NBSS 3) and served by a friendly mature barmaid. But I failed to feel any real warmth for the place and was happy to get gone. 5.5

The Railway Inn has a seating area to the right of the central entrance, and a small bar area to the left where the serving counter across the rear supports some keg, including one of my favourites, Blue Moon. The main bar area is found towards the rear where a serving counter on the left-hand wall faces some striped furniture. This furniture is also found in another seating area at the rear. There are four hand pumps that were drawing Dancing Duck’s Indian Porter, Lincoln Tank Ale, Full Mash High Five and Pheasantry Dancing Dragonfly which was extremely good. There’s also a large selection of Thatchers ciders as well as Madri. It was quiet with only three customers during a recent Thursday evening visit, but they were very friendly insisting that I sit with them while they watched cricket on a phone. The landlady was also very friendly; in fact, I think this is one of the friendliest pubs I’ve ever been in. Yes it’s a bit tatty around the edges, but it would certainly be one of my locals if I lived in Mansfield.

Second visit (7/11/23):
Having found this pub to be my favourite pub on my last visit to Mansfield, I was eager to pay it a return visit. Whilst my last visit was very quiet on a Wednesday evening, I wasn't quite sure what to expect on a Tuesday evening. However, my fears were soon allayed, as we'd stumbled on a large group of people enjoying a folk singing session in the main bar.
This time, I retreated to the snug at the front and were soon joined by several other drinkers filling the room. The atmosphere was much livelier than on my previous visit. It is a lovely pub to enjoy a drink. The only slight negative was that the beer selection wasn't quite as good as my last visit, with no dark beer and no cider that I could see this time. The selection was Woodforde's Bure Gold & Nog, Full Mash Summit's View & Dancing Duck Abduction.
Original Visit (23/3/22):
As you'd probably guess from the name, the Railway is very convenient for Mansfield's railway station. It's an old building that looks a little out of place amidst the nearby modern retail developments, the sort of place that developers love to buy up and demolish.
I was surprised to see this small boozer having no customers at all on my Wednesday evening visit. There are a couple of rooms at the front, a small snug on the left-hand side and an equally small dining room on the right. Beyond is another small room for drinkers with access to the toilets and also containing the principle servery.
A couple of friendly dogs were on hand to announce my presence to the landlady who soon arrived to serve me. 4 real ales were on - Welbeck Abbey Kaiser & Red Feather, Full Mash Whistlin' Dixie & North Riding Ice Cream Porter. In my final pub of the day, I'd also finally located a real cider here - Weston's Old Rosie.
I went for the Ice Cream Porter, which turned out to be my favourite beer of the day. The rear room is quite a cosy place to sit and I could have imagined spending quite a bit of time here, as one of the dogs settled down on my lap, with the other also demanding fuss.
Pub of the day in Nottinghamshire, which deserves to have more customers than just myself.
