Grey and gloomy interior which looks to have been refurbished over COVID in a rather misguided manner and it has the feel of a modernised non-league football club bar. Live music and sport heavily advertised and there's pool in the rear area. Britpop soundtrack. Servery looks like it's from IKEA and on offer were five ales, mainly local and regional though fairly samey style-wise, all seemingly pale bar the Wherry. I was the only person drinking any of the cask. My half of Tydd Steam Piston Bob tasted like stale homebrew, although cellaring appeared to be fine (NBSS 3); the curse of the unknown microbrewery? Decided to have a half of the Revelation by a brewery I’ve heard of which was also par (3). It all felt a bit uninspiring if I’m honest but better than the Bass next door.

The Yard of Ale has a U-shaped bar against the front right wall and behind steps lead down to a long seating area with pool table at the end. Televisions are found throughout and during my visit it was packed with locals watching the last few minutes of the England v Wales World Cup clash. It was a bit tricky to get a good look at the beer choices, but I did note the availability of standard and craft keg. I also counted four hand pumps, all in operation. I went for half a Baker’s Dozen Brewery’s Martes Trece and Oakham’s Rutland Beast, both well served by the governor who also gave me a taster even though the pub was heaving. I liked it in here and would gladly return.

Old Boots left this review about The Yard Of Ale
Two level modernised pub, bland throughout. Five pulls of national casks from first and second tiers, Doombore, Landlord, Summer Lightning, plus a house beer made by Dogfield - no me neither - and a beer from Lacons of Gt Yarmouth. Usual keg stuff. It’s GBG listed and beer quality is fine. Live music (folksy on this occasion)
