A splendid old pub, claimed to date from 1652, hidden just off the Market Place which has a pole proclaiming Haltwhistle to be the centre of Britain. We are told by the signs the village is 290 miles from Portland Bill to the south and North Orkney to the north and east to west 36 miles from Wallsend and Bowness on Solway. A dry cleaners and hotel nearby make hay with this claim.

Anyway back to the lovely pub, it’s low and fairly long with a good old flag floor, exposed stone walls and more recent ceiling beams decorated by horse brasses. The walls have a large amount of stuff, more horse tack, mining memorabilia and photos; there’s a row of old pump handles with aged clips to reminisce over. One corner has a sizeable collection of silverware, more than; insert name of least favourite football club here; there’s a dart board over the adjacent fireplace. The plain counter has six pulls with beers, today, from Taylors (Landlord), Great Corby and Allendale, quality was excellent. A T-bar has Tetleys, Cruzcampo and of course Guinness. Seating is on traditional banquettes at Britannia tables and stools. It has an unnecessary screen and linked piped music as well as a pull down screen. At the right hand end is a small snug. Cash definitely preferred under £5.

I'd remembered my missed visit from five years before, and timed my arrival better and got here at 5pm. Though as it was a Sunday it didn't really matter as the pub is open from noon. Anyway, it was good to find it open and fairly busy. It's a traditional whitewashed building, just off the market square. There are low beams and horse brasses, exposed stone walls, foot rails and hooks. There are six hand pumps but three cask beers on at the time of my visit: local Corby Ale and Allendale Golden Plover, plus Hobgoblin. My half of the Corby was fine (NBSS 3).

Arriving in Haltwhistle at 12:30 on Wednesday it was disappointing to find that this pub does not open until 3:30.
