The Knightley has been through a fair few hands over the years with varying degrees of success and, I'd guess, that it tells a typical pubco tale.
I'd heard that things had improved significantly over the past year or two under a competent manager, hence the visit.
It's the only pub in the village and is a pretty nondescript building but there's a small garden at the back which isn't a bad spot to enjoy a pint on a nice day.
Inside, it's straight into the small bar area which is entirely dominated by a pool table. Not necessarily a great start.
Beyond the bar is the lounge/dining room with around 10 tables, none set up for eating although a decent looking menu was available. This room fits the exterior in being nondescript and I couldn't help feeling that it could be a lot better with minimal effort and spend. This wasn't helped by the fireplace containing the ashes of the previous fire and a couple of empty crisp bags while the few visitors shivered in the cold of the pub.
One of the recommendations I'd received noted how the beer had improved and there were four available, more than I've ever seen before: Directors, Youngs Winter Warmer, Doombar and Dow Bridge Centurion. Not the most adventurous choice but Dow Bridge is a reasonable local brewery. Sadly, it's clear that no-one behind the bar had much of an idea as to how to keep the beer as our Centurion was beyond cloudy with large lumps of unidentifiable matter floating around in it. It was served by a pretty barmaid though.
I've since heard from the locals that the manager who had overseen the improvements had departed a couple of weeks previous and that the pub now no longer serves food.
So another decent chapter in the Knightley's story ends in disappointment and we await to see what the future brings.
As things stand, along with many of the villagers, I won't be returning disappointing for all that this is.

A stroll down from the Grand Union Canal, you enter the pub into a pool room with a bricked up fireplace and furniture around the edges but unusable if someone was actually playing pool.BT Sport is screened here. The basic bar here has two sections, both sporting four handpumps although beers will be doubled up.Beyond the bar there are three other modest sections all given over to numbered tables, although you can sit anywhere to drink. Here the fireplace remained unlit on a chilly morning while the pub was cold with even the attractive barmaid wearing a fleece. The food offering looked to have interesting mains and a selection of pub grub staples but the non descript modern furniture, dull interior decor and loud muzak featuring Phil Collins on our entrance didn't inspire confidence.I plumped for the Dow Bridge Centurion from a choice including Doom Bar,"Youngs" Winter Warmer and "Courage" Directors, and although the barrel was changed,it was brought on too early and was not only murky but contained increasing solid material as it was drunk. The pint wasn't finished and I wouldnt have fancied any of the other brews.
This visit was a big disappointment and the lack of other customers may indicate that the leasee of this pubco owned site needs to get their act together if another period of closure is to be avoided.
