A deep dive into the memory banks suggests I was here previously after Luton Town's dreary draw at Bath City in January 2011. More recent visits confirm that it is a beautiful heritage pub with very well kept beers, served from barrels on stillage behind the bar. Last night's Bass was a clear NBSS 4, but today's was if anything better, and was confirmed as being from a new barrel.

Bit of a default stop for me these days with the Priv Card. 20-25 minutes walk from the station but well-worth it. Bass and Abbey Bellringer always on. There are also rolls in the fridge.

The classic interior was a welcome relief from the grim modernism of the Brewed Boy. Another one where little has changed in the intervening years and my description from below can pretty much be re-printed. A pint of stillage Bass (NBSS 3.5) did the job for me whilst the other two enjoyed their pints of Goffs Porter and Abbey Bellringer. It’s GBG’22 and a must-visit in Bath – it lives-up to its name. Apparently the oldest pub in Bath (1760), this another little heritage gem, refitted in 1928. The relatively plain exterior gives way to four different rooms with oodles of dark wood panelling and real fires. Five ales; Bass (from the barrel via a jug), two Abbey ales in Bellringer and Mild, Marstons Pedigree and Jennings Snecklifter alongside a real cider (Hells Bells). The Abbey beers were in good nick, even if I discovered they really aren’t to my taste. We got a warm welcome, which befitted a pub free of music, fruit machines and TVs. Cockles and filled rolls available at the bar and, more intriguingly, complimentary snuff! The wild west-style swing doors on the toilets made me smile. Visitors beware, it closes in the afternoons. Another Bath gem, well-worth the plod up the hill for. Rated 8

Our final pub of the day. The pub has an impressive exterior and an even more impressive interior with multiple small rooms. There are 4 rooms in all, a snug to the left of the entrance door, a small area with a bench next to the bar which is apparently known as death row due to the elderly regulars who take up residence there. There was indeed one elderly gent on the bench for our visit. We sat in the furthest of the rooms to the right-hand side.
Abbey Ales Bath Bellringer & Bass are the 2 regular ales. Guests were Sharp's Sea Fury, Frome RA & Tiny Rebel Cwtch Gold. I've never been a particular fan of Cwtch itself, but the Cwtch Gold was quite enjoyable. I didn't spot any ciders, but may well have missed it/them.
Nevertheless, I thought this was the finest interior of any of the Bath pubs we sampled yesterday and was certainly one of the highlights of a decent day out.
