One of two pubs directly opposite the bottom of the 199 steps it’s long wide pub in three sections each with a decent harbour view,. There are three pulls at one end of the L shaped counter and a long horseshoe in the middle. Seating is at banquettes at one end with booths and tables and chairs in a middle section and more banquettes at tables in the furthest part. Frank Meadow Sutcliffe photos, old maps and older advertising posters as decor with exposed ceiling beams adding to the scene. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon visit with the limited staff managing to cope - just. Beers from Theakstons (Old Peculier), Taylors (Landlord of course), and Carlsberg (Wainwright but the clip was reversed so I don’t know if it was the fake version or not).

The Duke of York has seating to the left, including a couple of curved seats in bay windows that overlook the River Esk. The mid placed serving counter runs across the rear while supporting standard and premium keg as well as Beavertown’s Neck Oil. The three hand pumps were drawing Ossett’s White Rat, Wainwright and TT Landlord. Along the front wall opposite the counter are some booths and more seating is found in the right where a fireplace sits on the right-hand wall. Televisions throughout were airing muted Olympic coverage while some upbeat modern background music played. This isn’t the biggest place so I expect it gets very busy at peak times, but during my recent Monday evening visit it was a pleasant stop off.

A good sized pub at the end of a pedestrianised shopping street, and pretty much at the foot of the 199 steps up to the abbey, this is a good sized pub that was probably two separate buildings at one point, and has good views across the river to the other half of Whitby.

Internally, the style is a bit of a mixture of traditional and contemporary. There are sanded wooden boards on the floor along with some black and white patterned tiling around the bar counter, plenty of wooden beams on the ceiling and several areas of exposed brick walling. In contrast though, some areas, particularly to the left as you go in, had wood panelling on the lower part of the wall with duck egg blue paintwork, and a very artistic seascape wallpaper above. There were a few old pictures scattered around the walls, but then also several TV’s showing the football. It all rather felt as though it couldn’t decide what sort of style to go for. There were large windows to give the most of the outlook across the estuary if you were lucky enough to get one of those, and some large light fittings that looked to have been made from a couple of old cartwheels that had been sandwiched together.

Beers on tap were Timothy Taylor Landlord and Ossett White Rat, whilst a third pump appeared to have run out. Ciders meanwhile were Inch’s Medium Apple and Old Mout Berries & cherries.
