A staunchly traditional multi-roomed locals' pub on the heritage list. Someone seems to have gone berserk with the gloss black paint, so it is a bit monochrome apart from the splendid stained glass windows, but it does have a good pub feel, aided by a strong crowd of regulars. I could have done without the DJ booth in one corner, but apparently karaoke is a thing here, so I suppose needs must. Just Wainwright Gold on handpump that seems to have usurped the TT Landlord as the regular ale, which doesn't seem to warrant a GBG entry but there you go.

A helpful sign on the wall above the entrance warns that this is Northallerton's premier karaoke bar, which explains the numerous loudspeakers, and the DJ console next to the fireplace in the front room. Other than that, this is a pleasant, small, multi-roomed pub which features in Camra's list of pubs with historical interiors. To be fair, it's only of "some" regional importance, but worth a visit on that score if you like that sort of thing. Just one hand pump, with Timothy Taylor Landlord seemingly a fixture. I went instead for the keg version of Black Sheep Best Bitter, which was very cold but not too gassy, and had a nice bitter finish (though I suspect the recipe is slightly different, as it's considerably paler than the cask version). There were a couple of handfuls of locals here at the time of my visit, having a lunchtime soup-and-a-sandwich and trying to make themselves heard above the music, which was not, in my opinion, at a lunchtime volume. Despite this niggle this is quite a pleasant pub, though for real ale choice I'd be in the Tithe across the road, quick as a flash.

Quality of the Landlord seems to have improved since the previous visit, although it remained the only real ale offering.
As noted, a characterful wet-led pub at the northern end of the High Street. Reasonably busy on a Saturday afternoon and showing the rugby. Would return.
