Blue Scrumpy left this review about Lord Nelson Inn
The Lord Nelson is the last surviving pub in the village of Appleton Wiske. It doesn't open until 6pm daily, but clearly has a loyal band of local drinkers who congregate here from this time. Food is available Thursday-Sunday, which meant that the landlord was turning away food trade on our Thursday evening visit.
Having managed to beat all but one of the locals in with our prompt 6pm arrival, we sat in the public bar which soon had 4 other customers who were happy to engage in conversation. A room to the right of the entrance was more suitable for dining.
Theakston Best Bitter is the regular beer here, whilst the landlord prides himself in featuring a varied guest beer which was in excellent condition and also very much appreciated by the locals. On this occasion, it was Portobello Carnival Pale. This was easily my favourite beer of the day. The pub itself also hit exactly the right spot for me too and ended up being my favourite pub of 10 we visited in North Yorkshire. It's entry into the Good Beer Guide is well deserved.
