Filly & Flagon, Malton

The Filly & Flagon reopened in November 2025 having previously been called ‘The Gate.’ It had been closed since 2020 and the boarded, broken windows were becoming a major eyesore on the busy main thoroughfare in central Malton. I imagine a significant amount of money was spent getting the place back together as it is now a very smart pub. Presumably named after Malton’s fame as a racehorse town. Inside is one large area with a small section on a split lower level. A large centrally placed bar hosts the usual fizz together with Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and Abbot Ale on hand pump. The Landlord (£4.70 for a half with a good quality packet of crisps) was in excellent condition, cool and refreshing and as good as this beer gets these days (NBSS Good). A good mix of dining tables and soft seating for drinkers. Two wide screen televisions were present showing sport but silently. Piped music as per the current trend. Obtrusive but not as bad as many. The whole place is very neat and tidy and decorated to a high standard. Outside at the rear is a beer garden. Dogs are apparently welcome throughout. The barman was friendly and efficient. Overall a good 7/10 and could be higher if the beer was more exciting but I guess it is horses for courses. Recommended and I will return to sample the food.
