With The Crown nextdoor closed, our third and final stop in Hawes was the Board Inn, which appears in the 2024 Good Beer Guide. As such, I was expecting good things. The reality was quite disappointing.
Despite not serving food in the winter, this pub had more of a local feel than other pubs in the village. The bar area was busy with blockers, making the selection of a beer more difficult than it should be. Theakston Best Bitter & Timothy Taylor Landlord are the regular beers. Unfortunately, the guest beer was particularly exciting either, it being Ringwood Razor Back. I expected something a little more from a 2024 Good Beer Guide entry.
A few dogs were in. So were a small group of motorcyclists, but I'd have to concur with the previous review. There was nothing I found to particularly recommend this pub, which was just about the worst of a poor selection of pubs in Hawes.

I thought this pub was pretty mundane to be honest, although it was better than the Crown next door. Decor fairly standard, blank and verging on dull. Beer was decent and my Moorhouses brew was spot on. I just found nothing to latch onto here, it does all the proper pub things quite well but it doesn’t click at all as special pubs do. Good to escape the rowdy soccerball fans given the lack of TVs though.

This has never been my favourite among the four pubs in Hawes, so I called in on my last night here just to even things out, intending (after a half) to move on to one of the others if there wasn't anything I particularly fancied on the bar. There are four hand pumps, serving Theakstons Best Bitter, Black Sheep Best, Timothy Taylor Landlord and (saving the best until last) Black Sheep Rye Mild. Only the second time I've come across this fairly recent addition to the Paul Theakston portfolio, and I have to say I was once again impressed. To the extent of staying for a second pint, and then a half as a nightcap. The pub was pretty quiet, apart from a family party who appeared to be on a mission to eat all the food on the premises, and after they'd left I had the place to myself. I don't know how busy the Fountain or the Crown were on this wet and blustery Tuesday night, and the photo from March 2012 suggests that the Board has its busy periods, but with beer like this I hope plenty of others turn up here in future.
