An old corner pub tucked away in the side streets near the river. Lots of aged woodwork give a cosy feel, but at lunchtime was a bit over-focussed on food for my liking. Some reasonable beers on offer though, with Adnams Bitter and Ghost Ship, Woodforde Wherry and Oakham GHB plus some ciders.

Cromwell lived in St Ives and is remembered in the name. It's tucked away near to Great Ouse and is essentially open plan .The furniture is very chunky wooden square tables with equally heavy solid chairs and were out of keeping with a low ceiling ,cramped interior.Indeed a long section devoted to two ranks of this furniture looks very austere and uninviting, consequently everybody seems to gather around the bar, where bar stoll regular and blockers predominate making ale choice tricky. When indeed we did spot what was on there was more disappointment from this GBG listed pub with a choice of Adnams Broadside and Southwold,Maldon May Bee,Oakham JHB and Woodforde Wherry and Nelsons Revenge (ok initially but developed a tang at the end ).That's a conservative line up with nothing with much poke and several BBB.
The slightly unwelcoming atmosphere and dull ale line up meant we moved on after a pint, and not even a pleasant beer garden was enough to make us stay for a second.

Named after the eponymous soldier even though the pub was opened about 200 years after he demolished the town bridge, when Victoria was on the throne, it is still an historic edifice and a pretty good local. Eventually discovering this wonderful GBG perennial, we found it packed with CAMRA types, retired Army officers and miscellaneous others, no room even to swing a kangaroo. The interior is described by Aqualung, below. Beers on during this visit were Southwold Bitter, Phantom Pale Ale, Mid Autumn Gold, Ghostship, Broadside, Oakham's JHB plus 9 craft beers; I had Oakhams and Southwold, both in excellent condition . A pretty good pub and worth a visit, warts and all
