It's a long time since I was in this Fat Cat, and although I was really here to get a photo of its younger brother, the Mad Cat next door, I thought it would be rude not to pop in. The trouble with visiting somewhere like Norwich with a car is finding somewhere to park. The other problem is being limited as to how many beers are safe. I used so much time finding a parking space that I was going to just have a swift half, but somehow the words "pint of Norwich bitter, please" escaped my lips and 10 minutes later I was on my way back to the car. Gorgeous. (NBSS 4 and a ridiculous £3/pint. There's a lesson there for the original Fat Cat in Sheffield, now sadly not brewing its own beers.)

Probably the other most famous pub in Norwich after the Murderers, however a bit of a walk from the centre. Twelve hand pumps, four of their own brews and a wide ranging selection of others from Yorkshire to the Isle of Man to Essex. Three T-bars provide keg choices but only a few taps have anything approaching national brands. More cask beers are available on gravity dispense. It’s a beer lovers pub. There’s Belgian bottles and 17 ciders if beer isn’t your thing plus the usual spirits. Being a corner pub it’s basically L shaped with a multiplicity of little seating areas divided off with old windows in wooden dividers. The decor is a profusion of whisky jugs, bottles, brewery ads and pub signs. One wall is devoted to the awards won in the past. If drinking with friends or just an alcoholic two pint jugs are available at a 10% or so discount.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Fat Cat
Long overdue revisit, my first for 15 years, and this is what I wrote last time: "What a great place - tucked away in an outer Norwich side street, but a 'must' for any real ale drinker visiting the area. Fantastic choice of beer on handpump and direct from the barrels in the back room. Nice friendly atmosphere too." No reason to change any of that, and I'll just note my Norwich Bitter from the eponymous brewery was as excellent as I expected.
