Glad to report the service here has improved although we visited on a quiet afternoon. Five beers now on pretty much as before; Abbott, Adnams, two from Woodforde’s including of course Wherry and a 3.9% pale labelled as Gin Trap Ale. Physically the place is the same so I won’t add to Thuck Phat’s copious description. Still in the GBG although good the beer wasn’t a NBSS 5 more 3.5. It stocks over 100 gins hence the name.

The Gin Trap is a beautiful, traditional, whitewashed, 17th Century coaching inn in the unspoilt village of Ringstead some 2 miles from the North Norfolk coast. It has a small gravel car park at the front, and larger one at the back, in the middle of which is a mature chestnut tree with some wooden benches next to the pub for sunny days.
On entering you walk straight into the traditional bar equipped with worn wooden tables, beer mats and a log burner. Behind this is a large conservatory laid for dining and there's another dedicated dining room to the left. We visited early on a Saturday evening and before I could even make it to the bar were shouted at as to whether or not we had a reservation. And I thought we'd entered a pub. Fortunately we had booked a table and it transpired that if you hadn't then you simply didn't sit down as all the tables throughout the pub were being used for food.
The surly service continued throughout the evening and we certainly didn't manage to raise a smile from the staff and gave up in the end. The menu was top end pub food with only a small nod to location in the shape of one or two fish dishes. It's not cheap with mains ranging from £11 up to £18 but everything we had was fresh, well cooked and substantial.
Beer range was limited to the, ubiquitous in this area, narrow range of Woodforde Wherry, GK IPA and Adnams Southwold. The Wherry was good but it's not an inspiring pint at the best of times.
We also visited later in the week when the pub was less busy and the service was certainly friendlier although the focus is very clearly on food which was just as good as on the first visit. We also learnt that the current incumbent couple are in the process of splitting up which may help to explain the surliness which we and other customers encountered.
I'd recommend the Gin Trap for it's location and food but not it's service, ambience or beer. I have no idea how it got into the 2011 GBG.
