The Blackfriars Tavern is a corner wedge shaped pub with a front bar area where small tables sit on a very worn carpet under a couple of massive rosettes stuck to the ceiling, one for CAMRA Cider & POTY 2025 and the other for National Finalist POTY 2025. To the left is a piano that is strewn with old beer magazines, the Blackfriars Library, and the counter across the rear to the left was being manned by a CAMRA high priest on a quiet Tuesday evening when there were only two other customers. All the tables had games on them ranging from Jenga to crib and draughts etc. In the rear is a back room with more seating and more tables with games, bar billiards and a dartboard. There was some instrumental reggae music playing the background and on the rear right wall is a screen for displaying the available drinks. I counted 16 hand pumps along the counter, nine of which were in operation drawing the inhouse Blackfriars Tavern’s Foreign Export Scholars Stout and Blessed Bitter alongside Lacons Brewery’s Contrast and Penny Black, Mr Winter’s Brewing’s Prancer’s Pale, Ampersand Brewery’s Bidon, Tindall Ales Brewery’s I’ll See You Home, All Day Brewing’s Fruhstuck and Drenchfoot Brewery’s Red Fokker. A decent selection with only half the pumps active, and I loved the Blackfriars’s own Blessed. I also noted a craft cider selection available. Even though there were only two other customers, there was still a good atmosphere, and I really enjoyed my stay, so I’ll be revisiting when back in GY.

This was to be my first pub of a circuit I had designed to take in those of the 16 regional winners in CAMRA's pub of the year which I had not previously visited. (To make it easier, I'd been to 11, and those in Broadstairs and Northern Ireland looked too far to go for a pint, which left me with three to do: here, one in Hertfordshire and one near Aberystwyth.) Careful planning had identified possible parking places in Mariners Road next to the Blackfriars and I replaced the busy A47 with the haven of peace and great beer which is East Anglia's pub of the year. (See description by Steve below.) I received a friendly welcome from behind the bar, which had copious hand pumps on it. They were having a local beer special, and I went for a 3.6% mild from Mr Winter's (of Norwich) and an American amber from All Day (of Reepham): both were tremendous, with a combined average NBSS 4.25. I resisted the temptation of the house brewery barley wine, but it's available in bottled form so I bought one to bring home. I'm really glad I made the effort to come to this pub and I wished them well in the national pub of the year judging.

The Blackfriars is a friendly place in the Yarmouth backstreets with plentiful ales, a vast number of ciders, well over a hundred bottles from Belgium and more locally, as well as their own brewery on-site. 2 of the in-house brews were available - a nitro-stout on handpump and a Czech pilsner on the kegs. Out the back, there's a couple of yards - one ok for smoking, and one not. There's pretty much the complete boozer set-up here.

In summary: excellent pub; great beer; hard to drag myself away (which, in retrospect, did turn out to be a poor move on my part).
