This is still a Shepherd Neame house, with the usual range of ales on, but at this time of year we get the additional treat of Late Red, which many consider to be their best ale. We were in there far too late in the evening to see any menus, but several blackboards on the right wall gave an extensive resume of the food available at other times – including numerous “specials”, as well as curry and fish menus with dishes between £8 - £12, Sunday roasts at £9.95, and an Irish cheeseboard menu at £5.95.
The pub itself is a quite sedate affair, and in fact just the sort of place one needs just around the corner from the train station when you have 15 – 20 minutes to wait for a train. It’s carpeted throughout, has a central island bar, has a couple or so sofas but is mainly furnished with normal tables and chairs. The barmaid was friendly and welcoming, and the clientele seemed to be quiet and genteel. This is a comfortable pub, and easily a better bet than its immediate neighbours.

Now a single room with a central rectangular bar, though clearly once seperate areas. Carpeted, a mix of traditional seating at small tables, upholstered banquettes, some bar stools and to the left of the bar, two Chesterfield type sofas, and an armchair around the fireplace with a flat screen TV over (showing football with the sound down). Decor is mainly old photos of the surrounding area, some rugby pics and a signed shirt and a display of US Police badges, rather unusually. Very clean and tidy with a bit of an austere feel, mature clentele, I can't imagine this place ever being noisy or rowdy. Nevertheless a not unfriendly welcome and a relaxed ambience.
Decent looking specials menu, fairly priced, eg pork hock in cider and apple gravy with mash, £9.95, soup and a warm baguette is £3.50.
Decent Sheps ales, served in the appropriately marked glasses served from 5 handpumps. No Porter though.
