I used to live a 15-minute walk from the Jolly Waggoner before moving to North London in the mid-nineties, so unsurprisingly it has certainly changed in here since my last visit 30 years ago. The main part of the building is used only for events, think Indian weddings, and the upstairs is now a 3-star bed and breakfast taking advantage of the proximity of Heathrow Airport. Drinks are still available in the small JW Bar, but during a recent early midweek afternoon visit all the keg was off which left only bottles, a 330 ml bottle of Stella set me back a whopping £4.20, no wonder I was the only customer. There is a pool table, but the décor is more curry house than bar and the staff seemed very surprised to see me. After some confusion they realised I had come in for a beer, it was all very odd, especially when they turned the volume up on the Indian music channel on the television. I suppose it’s good that the Jolly Waggoner hasn’t been turned into flats, but I wouldn’t class it as a pub anymore.
