Has changed hands again (Nov 2025) under new management for the last Month. Back in the 70's it was my go to pub in Enfield, close to Enfield Chase Station. The Pub retains a lot of the Old Two separate Bar areas style and has a large garden seated area. A few Years ago it was owned by the Big Smoke Brewing Co and it's Real Ale selection was one of the best in North London, but it was taken by Punch Taverns and the selection was back to 4 pumps. Not sure who are the Brewery now (Nov 2025) but the new management have kept the 4 pumps and have been serving Old Speckled Hen, Wadworth 6X, TT LandLord, Fullers London Pride on various occasions I have visited lately. There is a food menu but I haven't tried it yet. I have rated it a 6 of 10 @ present.

This is a very attractive, two bar pub, just a few doors down from Enfield Chase station. The right-hand room is a simple but pleasant public bar with two lovely bay windows sporting fine etched glass "Public Bar" panels, with decorative leaded panes above. It's a bare boarded room with button backed banquettes to the front right and rear left and basic tables and chairs elsewhere. The servery is along the back wall and has a tongue and groove counter front, chunky dark wood pillars upholding a grand gantry, and a modern, glazed tile bar back with a long row of keg taps, about half of which were in use. A fine, tiled fireplace stands to the right with an impressive mantlepiece and surround, whilst a much smaller fireplace can be seen to the left, partly covered by a blackboard promoting their off-site catering service. The walls have been decorated with a large Big Smoke brewery mirror, several modern art prints and a sizeable pump clip collection on the left-hand side. The lounge bar can't be reached from here, so I didn't get to explore it properly, but it appears to be a larger space with similar decor and furniture and a good stretch of servery down the right-hand wall. It also sounded like they were showing live football, but I couldn't see the screen myself, although disco tracks were unmistakably playing in the Public Bar, so it was difficult to hear properly and I may have just imagined the football sounds!
On the bar, a solid ale range comprised Fullers London Pride, Sharps Doom Bar, St Austell Tribute and Wainwright's Amber. Keg beer comes from Laine and a couple of other micro breweries and is more varied than in your average boozer. A very friendly bar team all said hello individually when I arrived, which was a nice touch that instantly made it feel like a comfortable place to settle down in.
I thought this was a nice pub with a great two bar set up, plenty of interesting traditional features and well integrated modern design elements, some decent beer and great service. A slightly more adventurous ale selection may have made me up my rating, but either way, this was my pub of the day and a good way to round out my time in Enfield.

Update: Sadly The Wheatsheaf is no longer part of the Big Smoke stable and they sold it some time last year to one of the pub arms of Punch Taverns. The real and craft ale range is much more reduced from the Big Smoke ownership and there were three ales on for my recent visit, London Pride, Adnams Ghostship and something badged as Wheatsheaf Pale Ale (which was actually quite decent).
Fortunately the two room interior and the very good garden space outback remains unchanged , but have to knock a point off for the reduced ale range.

The Old Wheatsheaf has now reopened after a period of closure for a makeover after being bought by the Big Smoke Brewing Co of Esther.
Fortunately the makeover has not changed the attractive exterior of the pub and there have been no changes to the still two room period interior of the pub that saw it included in the CAMRA London Inventory of pubs with historic interiors. Internally the only real changes have been to the bar in the larger room itself that now has a line of eight hand pumps to the fore and a new tiled 13 tap wall to the rear.
For my initial visit a week after its reopening alongside Big Smoke Solaris and Music Room there were Oakham Ciltra, Harvey’s Best, Roosters Highway 51 and Laine Brewing Doubloon on the pumps and ciders on the remaining two. Then the tap wall had several craft offerings from Big Smoke amongst others from Marble, Siren, Red Squirrel and Hackney Brewery.
But the biggest changes has been externally round the back and the area that used to be a fitness centre is now the pubs spanking new garden with lots of bench seating and several individual huts around two sides of the new outdoor space.
Both the ales I tried were in good condition and the makeover has catapulted the Old Wheatsheaf into the position of being the best pub for beer choice in Enfield Town, but to be honest it didn’t have a lot to beat.
