An imposing looking brick built pub just to the north of Kew Bridge, it’s even bigger than expected inside with the premises stretching some way to the rear, and a garden beyond that.

Décor wise it’s fairly traditional, with dark wooden boards on the floor, black wooden panelling on the lower part of the walls as well as some black inset timberwork, and a white washed ceiling. Numerous pictures were covering the walls, many of them black and white caricature style portraits, including a number of Labour politicians, as well as a large gilded mirror and many very small family style portraits. An old fireplace at the front was covered in wine bottles that were some completely obscured in candle wax that they looked more like abominable snowmen. Seating was a mixture of padded benches fitted around much of the permitter, as well as tables and stools. A snig off to the right was somewhat more contemporary in style, with blue and white wallpaper, a bookshelf in the corner and an elegant chandelier. Further out to the back was a conservatory extension with slate tiling on the floor that was presumably more geared up for dining with rows of tightly packed tables, and beyond this again was a good sized beer garden, much of it under cover, complete with astroturf and green wooden tables and chairs.

The menu offered a decent selection of pub grub style dishes, and I opted for the BBQ chicken pizza. I was warned when ordering that there was a 30 minute wait for food, but it ended up being 50 minutes and it was served basically cold, lukewarm at best. A shame, as up until that point I had been thinking it was a pretty decent pub.

Beers on tap were Exeter Ferryman, Five Points Railway Porter, Exeter Grubber, Tiny Rebel Cwtch, Siren Nectaron, Five Points Best, Harvey’s Sussex Best and Bass. Ciders too were well represented with Pulp Rhubarb, Lilley’s Pina Colada, Saxby’s Cloudy Strawberry, Seacider and Inch’s Medium Apple. Overall, a nice pub with a very good beer range, but I certainly wouldn’t bother with the food again, and it’s a point off because of that.

Classy old pub at the northern end of Kew Bridge, too many reviews to add much but its multi room charms and eclectic decor won’t disappoint many. 10 pumps of mostly interesting small breweries beers, the biggest name being Molson Coors Bass then a step down a lot to Harvey’s Sussex Best. I didn’t recognise any others apart from Five Points which was in good condition as expected in a GBG listed pub. A few odd looking or gobshite customers but then it’s London. On a second visit a day later it was different staff and they were aloof or mardy, the beer was still ok apart from the cloudy Bass.

Excellent pub, though managing to visit the same time as a Brentford home game meant I struggled to take things in as it was a tight squeeze. Very impressive exterior what with its illuminated Draught Bass signage, leading to a tight front bar with a snug off right and a room to your left leading to a modern conservatory extension. Plenty of cask at the bar (too many for a normal day?), Bass for me (NBSS 3.5) in a plastic cup and a perch on the wall in the well-appointed courtyard garden where fans from both teams were mixing happily, with the pub putting on a BBQ to cash-in. I’d like to revisit at a quieter time to take-in the CAMRA Inventory angle, my bad for not checking the fixtures. Anyways, I saw enough to be impressed.
