Nice pub for a quick beer on a weekday afternoon. Only a few minutes walk downhill from New Brighton station so handy for trains. The Trappers Hat had just gone so the only ale available for me was Hawkshead Windermere Pale, and that was more than acceptable. Real all is on the back bar, so not immediately obvious when you walk in.

The James Atherton has undergone a number of name changes in recent years. One recent title was the Three Bellends, referring to Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings and Matt Hancock during Covid times. It then became the Two Helmets with Cummings escaping.
These days it is the James Atherton and is one of a number of pubs in close proximity within this part of New Brighton. I was here on a Sunday afternoon, as it was the last Merseyside pub in the Good Beer Guide that I didn't think I'd visited. In actual fact, the interior looked very familiar. So, I may well have been here before!
Sport was showing on various TVs and the bar staff were discussing the day's football fixtures with a couple of other punters. Trapper's Hat & White Rat are the regular beers. A guest beer was ITI. Menus on tables were offering some kind of Indian food, which seemed a little different.

This pub has had a makeover since the last review and is apparently much better according to my mate who lives locally.
I did a walk past, but too early for it to be open, because it was amusingly renamed to the Three Bellends in October 2020 in honour of the then daily Covid briefings by the Government. Sadly it has reverted to its proper name.
