We too found this pub to be quite basic, but nevertheless it was busy enough with it's regulars. There was one handpump serving Thwaites Wainwright, which was excellent. The rest of the beers were served on keg. The small keg fonts along the bar looked more like a Sam Smiths pub.

Slightly basic place, not exactly comfortable, on a main road out of the town and near the station. There is a pool table at one end. A bit of a locals place it is however very clean and smart and, though there was only a choice of 2 Thwaites beers the quality was excellent and it deserves its place in the 2012 Good Beer Guide.

A excellent 'old' style pub which reminds me of picture of pubs during the WW2 era. It is often frequented by the older retired gentlemen but rarely has many younger folk here.
I went in here with my fiancée to have something to eat, I selected chicken curry which was 100% home-made and was piping hot and served within 10 minutes of ordering, likewise for my fiancée who ordered 'Scouse' (A type of stew) Drinks were of a small selection mostly consisting of ales with a minority of lagers, ciders and spirits.
Food is also very cheap as well but as was already stated excellent in quality and quantity and at only £3.50 per dish is an excellent bargain. 2 coca-colas came to £2.05 so it really is an excellent place.
The staff were very welcoming and friendly, the chef who served the meal enquired afterwards how it was and we were even given a compliment by another member of staff that we were a 'Nice and Polite' couple.
Definitely a place I would visit again and would recommend.
