Blue Scrumpy left this review about Berry & Rye

This has to be one of the stranger bars I've been to in Liverpool. I knew of its existence from this website and others, but must have walked past the premises countless times without even noticing it was there.

The bar opens at 7pm on a Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday with 5pm opening on other days. Our visit was late on a Tuesday evening. In fact, it was almost midnight. They open until 1am (2pm on Friday & Saturday). The door was locked, as expected. But we could see a barmaid and 2 couples inside. I tried knocking on the windows and door a few times, to no avail. I even tried to find a telephone number for them, but I'm not sure they have one.

Eventually after around 10 minutes, my persistent and stronger knocks of the door seemed to grab the barmaid's attention and she came to the door to let us in.

Inside, there is a long and narrow space with seating on the left and the bar on the right. The bar is stocked with a large range of spirits. Table service is in operation and a menu lists a good range of cocktails, spirits and a handful of beers, the most exciting of which was a draught Me & The Devil from Black Lodge, a rye IPA served as a schooner. I'm not normally a fan of rye beers, but this one was surprisingly enjoyable.

Having sample my drinking companion's turkey flavoured cocktail, I was eager to try one of my own. It was some kind of pineapple concoction with a sizeable lump of ice in the glass.

In addition to drinks, I believe you could also purchase a cheeseboard and possibly other snacks. Prices are steep, but judging by the other clientele, this is the kind of place you take your partner to impress. The 3 of us who staggered in at the end of a day's real ale drinking in Liverpool probably aren't their target customer base.

Nevertheless, I like the concept of this place and it's possible a return visit will be on the cards at some point in time.

Now open as "Berry And Rye". Its based on a Chicago speakeasy and to gain access you have to knock on the door. A couple of largely beers are available but its mostly cocktails and spirits. For trendy arses and people with more money than sense. Opens from 5.
