Another gorgeous pub that I've photographed and drunk in but never written a review on this website. The reason: it's always been as part of a pub crawl, or with my football mates, and it's been too busy or I've been too drunk to do it justice. So here I am on a quiet Sunday in January and it's quiet enough for me to take it all in and appreciate it for the fine pub it is. There are six cask beers on hand pump, plus a real cider. I went for Fyne Ales Jarl which is absolutely tremendous (NBSS 4.5, £4.50/pint; minimum spend on a card is £5). I went into the little room - not a snug, not a drinking corridor, just a small space with a stretch of bar counter and some shelves to lean on - and got chatting to a local who drinks Guinness. There was space between customers to have a peek into the other rooms. I would be happy to come back here every week. The train fares would be prohibitive though.

I didn't exactly go out exploring The Roscoe Head, but still managed to count 3 rooms at this classic award winning pub. It seems I was visiting at the tail end of a Yorkshire Day tap takeover event, so Timothy Taylor ales dominated the bar, with Knowle Spring, Boltmaker and Landlord: the former not often seen; the last increasingly common. The Knowle Spring wasn't quite to my taste, and £5.30 is the kind of price I've become accustomed to paying in 2025, but I'd happily call in again sometime.

The Roscoe Head is a small pub that feels a lot like a house with two seating areas up the right, both with fireplaces and the rear one being slightly larger than the front. The bar is found on the left wall where it serves a snug to the front left where a beer shelf runs under the front window and the foyer to the right that is standing room only. The three hand pumps on the bar in the snug were drawing Big Hand Brewing’s Palewulf, Fixed Wheel Brewery’s The Cricket and Colbier Beer Co’s Presto Stout while the four hand pumps on the foyer counter were drawing TT Landlord, Fyne Ales’ Jarl, Tetleys and Thistly Cross cider. Premium keg products and Carlsberg were also available, but alas the pie display case on the bar was empty. The barman was very friendly and I enjoyed my visit to this beer and conversation pub.
