A complete change of emphasis since my last review. It's now a multi-handpump alehouse along with some real ciders. Called in on a Sunday afternoon and the place was quite busy. However both our beers were a little on the tired side, probably too many handpumps for the current trade. We'll give it another try next time we're around here and hope for better quality.

This pub is named after the 5th U.S. president James Monro, but I'm not sure why. It's very food orientated pub with the whole of the room on the left as you enter and the rear room set up for dining. There was a real fire going in the hearth and the bar is straight in front of you. It's a Marston's house and 3 beers from their extended stable were available. I had a pint of Wychwood Jester Jack which was in good condition. This pub made the CAMRA GBG2012, but it's not in the 2013 version. I'm not surprised really, it's now more of a restaurant with a real ale bar rather than a pub.

This pub has the longest display of hand pumps I think I have seen in a pub. I made my choice from a line of 10 - I went for Northern Monk Sup, a 3.4% easy drinking, slightly fruity pale (NBSS 3.5, £2.15 for a half) - and as I turned away to find somewhere to sit, I saw five more. Admittedly one of them was a cider, but it's still 14 cask beers. This is a large pub with many different rooms, changes of level and also of environment, as it's easy to drift into a semi-enclosed courtyard, with screens showing football. The main bar has girders and pillars, so I think it's part of a building made using the modern techniques that are seen in a lot of Liverpool's business areas, built around the turn of the 20th century: the forerunners of skyscrapers. It seems to be popular with people of student age, as well as people approaching my age. I don't know what it's like at busier times - there are plenty of staff so they must get busier than at 7pm Tuesday - but at this time of day it's pretty comfortable.

This pub has a stunning looking bar area and it was fab to see it in its full glory, when the pub was quiet. The interior has lots of features such as ornate cast iron balustrades and herringbone patterned block flooring. The staff in here were friendly and chatty and this pub is also a good outlet for Locale.
On handpump TT Golden Best, Salopian Lemon Dream, Beartown Lit, Black Lodge Brewery A Better Land and Shake Hand, Brimstage Trappers Hat, Bass, Theakston Quencher, Titanic Plum Porter Weetwood Cheshire Cat, Northern Monk Sup and two from Neptune Aries and Pacu.
