The Carnarvon castle is a small and tidy pub with a wooden floored front bar with red painted walls that are adorned with framed photos of sporting events and the local area. There’s a high table in the front window and a U-shaped tile edged wood panel serving counter runs up the left opposite banquettes that run up the right to the rear wall. In the rear is a seating area with a red carpet that matches the walls in the bar and there was background noise throughout courtesy of a radio station. I counted six hand pumps on the counter in amongst the standard and premium keg. The Directors was off which left Ossett’s White Rat, Bombardier, Black Sheep Best, TT Landlord and Wainwright as the cask ale options. There was a decent crowd in attendance, especially for a Monday afternoon, so worth a look if passing.

A narrow frontage opens into a corridor pub with the bar on the left hand side with seating directly opposite which means it's difficult to get past when it's full of bar leaners, which it was. At the rear it opens out a bit into another room. Full of old boys and a few old girls at 12 lunchtime on a Monday. They specialise in toasties and a few were coming in just for a takeaway toastie for their lunch. A fairly pedestrian range of beer, but my Timmy Taylors Boltmaker was in good nick. Lots of friendly banter going on with the barmaid. It's a proper locals local in the middle of the city centre.

You'd probably walk on past, but this would be a mistake. Somehow surviving the shopping centre construction, its a survivor.
Small and narrow inside but full of locals. Open early and offering a wide selection of full english or toastie breakfasts at a very good price.
5 real ales on cask. Alas, my TT Boltmaker was a drain pour and I was wary about making a fuss. It was changed with an apology and pump clip reversed, swapped with a courage directors which (like how these stories usually go) was excellent.
A very enjoyable visit and I will remember the value breakfasts if I am ever passing again!
