The Albert has a "historic pub interior of regional importance" and features in Camra's book of such pubs to be found in the north-west of England. This was my first of a day of visiting a few of these in the suburbs of Liverpool. It's a lovely multi-roomed pub with many well-preserved features, though it has clearly been opened out to a large extent. There are two cast iron pillars holding the ceiling up - unusually (at least in my experience), these actually stand on the bar counter (unless the bar counter has somehow been built around them). More importantly, perhaps, there are three hand pumps on the bar, with Mobberley Boom Juice, Sharps Doom Bar and Little Critters Malty Python available. I usually swerve Sheffield brews when on my travels, but made an exception here as I wasn't in the mood for Doom Bar (expecting to find it the only available beer in some pubs further out later in the day) and beers that trade on their similarity to fruit juice are anathema to me. Unfortunately, the Python was not in the best of nick, and only just acceptable. I only found out when doing some recycling that a 10% Camra members discount is available, the information being on the wall above the urinals.

Large pleasant enough pub. Serves real ales. One of the few traditional looking pubs on the lane.
