The George & Dragon is a long U-shaped carpeted pub with a central U-shaped serving counter that supports standard keg, Staropramen and Cruzcampo. Seating runs across the front etched windows and banquettes are found down the left and right-hand walls. Televisions throughout were airing muted horse racing and 60s background music was playing from the free jukebox. Regular Karaoke and DJ nights are advertised, but thankfully not during my recent Tuesday early evening visit. There were some real deadbeats in here, and I think one of them had a go at me in the toilet, but I’m not sure because I couldn’t understand a word he was saying. His equally inebriated mate then came over to, I think, apologise, but again I’ve got no idea what he said. Looking out the window I saw that the sun had gone down, so I decided to slosh back my half of piss and end my mini crawl of Birkenhead by jumping back on the train to the bright lights of Liverpool.
