Attempted to visit on a Saturday night back in May, to find the front door firmly shut and locked at 9pm. Hopefully a one-off, but there was no note on the door to explain the early closure, and we were left disappointed. The cynic in me wonders if erratic opening hours and the poor ale selection mentioned by Mr Scrumpy below suggest this pub is on the decline - let's hope we both just had a bit of bad luck and caught the place on off days.

Long and thin pub. We entered from Queen Street and exited onto Lloyd Street. I won't describe the interior again, as it has been already adequately described below. Suffice to say there were a couple of real ales from Brightside - B-Side & Horsemen and a couple of real ciders from Weston's - Rosie's Pig & Cloudy Vintage.
This is a pub that was last in the Good Beer Guide in 2018 and it's one that I've been meaning to visit for a while. The interior does lack a little character and it sounds like we caught it on an off-day with just 2 ales. Although the offering of 2 ciders gives it an extra point in my book.

The front entrance of the Rising Sun, from Queen Street, leads to a rectangular seating area. Banquette seating in the front window area is overlooked by a television that was off during a recent Thursday afternoon visit when the pub was busy with a boisterous after work crowd and some tourists. The banquette seating continuous along the right wall up to the bar and along the wood panelled left wall are more tables and chairs. The bar on the right rear wall supports a limited premium keg range as well as eight hand pumps. These were drawing Brightside’s Odin Blonde, Sharp’s Landlord, two Moorhouses ales, Lancaster Brewery’s Lancaster Blonde and three Westons ciders, two from the Vintage range and Old Rosie. The bar faces some high tables and stools to the left and a long corridor at the rear leads to the toilets and the entrance on Lloyd Street.
I found the service from the long standing landlady to be extremely friendly, but considering the age and history of this place I was hoping for a more of traditional pub with some interesting features.
