I spotted this pub from the bus as I was returning from Chorlton and thought it might be worth a try. I'm glad I did, as it's a decent backstreet pub almost under the railway, and true to style in that it looks like an alehouse and it certainly sells ale. Though not as many as first impressions suggest, the eight hand pumps having plenty of "coming soon" notices attached to pump clips from the likes of Mobberley and Millstone breweries. (There's also a cider from Somerset.) My choice lay between Titanic Plum Porter, Robinsons Trooper and Theakston Old Peculier. My choice of a half of the last named turned out to be a good call, as it was in very good condition (NBSS 4, £5.10/pint). I liked it here for a quiet drink mid-afternoon, in pleasant surroundings and with listenable music at a tolerable level. I'll bear this on mind for future Manchester visits.

An old style rock pub, sadly lacking any bikers and rock chicks. The music was good old style rock classics on our visit and the atmosphere was upbeat. There was a choice of six cask ales and one cider on the beer board, which displayed the beer ABV, but not the prices for some reason.
The line up was Theakston Best Bitter and Old Peculiar, Robinsons Trooper, Mobberley Mosaic, Castle Rock Crafty Flanker and TT Landlord. I liked the layout in here, the decorative bar with stained glass panels and decorative tiles along the perimeter of the bar front.

The Salisbury is found down a short cobbled slope in the shadow of railway arches that pass close by. This location and attractive traditional exterior is very inviting so I was quite excited to give this pub a go. Inside, the front of the pub has a laminate floor and flagstones are found at the rear. In the front left is a pool table area, and then the bar counter runs up the left-hand wall facing some high tables up the centre and small partitioned seating areas up the right-hand wall. Eight hand pumps are supported, Big Bog Brewing’s Peat Bog Porter, Theakston’s Old Peculiar, Titanic’s Black Ice, Adnam’s Mosaic, Robinson’s Trooper, Acorn Brewery’s Gorlouka and one of Thatcher’s Stan’s ciders were all available. There was an eighth cask beer, but I couldn’t read the clip, even with my eyes no further than 3 inches away. I don’t understand why you would design a pump clip that is unreadable, muppets! Anyway, I went for the Porter, which was very good. Premium keg was also available, as are pizzas until 17:00. There is no evening food service as far as I could tell. I found the service to be polite, but the pub had a transient feel, which I suppose is to be expected being so close to Oxford Road Railway Station. I’d return if passing.
