A pub which CAMRA lists as having an interior of Regional Importance; I'll have to take their word for it as it was shut last night, with no sign of when it will reopen.

Still retains it's tiled exterior and some interior tiling but a bit rough round the edges now. Central island bar serves a standard draught selection. Handy for the fitba.

The Ship was first recorded in 1610 and was one of 4 coaching Inns in Tottenham servicing the London - Cambridge route. The original building was described as having 6 gables and would have presumably been an impressive and quite sizeable place. The current pub is late Victorian and still retains a few fragments of its original features, notably the green tiled façade and large lantern, ornate patterned burgundy ceiling, an impressive fireplace, patterned windows and some interior tiling although sadly much of this is now hidden behind the modern built in seating. There are still some dividing screens near the doors with patterned glass but most of the original divisions have been removed leaving an open, walk round pub with an island bar with a small recess at the rear of the pub.
The pub has undergone a minor facelift since my last visit and is a bit less tatty than it once was although I can’t help feel that they have not made the best of what it has to offer. The newer seating is annoyingly low with shin high tables and some of the wallspace seems quite bare having removed some of the displays (including that of the pub’s history). Fortunately the magnificent Taylor Walker mirror remains but overall there just seems to be an empty feel to the place. There is a pool table at the rear that is opushed to one side on match days to cater for the masses as well as 2 flat screen TVs.
There used to be 4 hand pumps albeit they were never in use on any of my previous visits and the fact that they have now been removed suggests that that Real Ales are not on their agenda. The only offerings are the standard kegs, lagers, Guinness etc.
The beer garden comprises a small patio under a makeshift plastic corrugated roof and a basic TV. The rest of the garden (for want of a better word) is an unsightly mass of builder’s rubble. With a bit of imagination (and money) much could be made of the garden, especially with it’s the 2 railway arches that back onto the area that could be made into a wonderful feature.
The pub gets very busy on match days when plastic glasses only are used but for the rest of the time the customer base appears to be made up of card schools and semi winos. I have always thought that this place has the most potential of any Tottenham pub but it would need someone with imagination, dedication and a few bob in the bank to bring it out.
