Steve of N21 left this review about The Olive Branch
My Granddad used to drink in the Olive Branch back in the 50’s and early 60’s when it used to be an imposing Victorian boozer located on nearby Northumberland Grove. History has it that it used to have a wonderful mahogany interior and a bowling green of all things at the back.
Unfortunately that was all swept away during the Tottenham council’s building of the expansive Northumberland estate of slab blocks and dull terraces. The bland two room estate pub that bears the original pub name is now located on Park Lane and is built into the ground floor of one of those said dull housing blocks and it’s fair to say it is a far cry from the Victorian splendor of the original.
For reasons I cannot now remember it was our chosen match day pub for a couple of seasons in the early 90’s. God knows why as it used to attract some ‘characters’ and the beer, except for the Guinness, was terrible and if you didn’t drink the black stuff then the only safe beer was the Newky Brown in bottles. The only saving grace was that it was close to the side of the ground our season ticket entrance was and the Irish landlord was a top bloke.
And for another reason I cannot really explain I decided to look the place up again the other day. Nothing has changed except that the old Irish landlord passed away a couple of years ago.
The only reason I can see for the existence of this place is to give the local inhabitants of the concrete jungle that is the Northumberland Estate somewhere to escape to.
