Back in again for a pre match pint but this time before Saracens annual shindig against the Quins, and found the Antwerp on top form. Packed out as expected, but this being a rugby crowd, a lot less profanities and a lot more civilised queuing. All Redemption beers tried were in good form, and excellent work behind the jump to keep up with demand.
If you want to experience the Antwerp properly, then recommended to visit on a non match day. And don’t be put off by the reviewer below. You will only be watched by the bar staff if you look like you are a ‘wrongun’ up to no good and clearly out of place in a community back street local in N17.
This area of Bruce Castle takes its name from the Bruce family, who owned large parts of the manor of Tottenham from at least the 13th century.

Originally the Hope & Anchor, the story of this pub’s history is well documented on CAMRA’s site and serendipitously it became the third pub visited by me this month in both Islington and Tottenham which were in, or overlooked where my grandparents variously lived; I use the term ‘lived’ loosely, as they now reside immediately to the rear in Tottenham Cemetery.
The interior is well described below, with a largely modernised interior featuring plenty of – probably modern – dark wood, modern boarded floor, fireplace with logs for decoration rather than heat, wasabi-coloured walls above grey/brown wainscoting, a white ceiling and Victorian-style chandeliers, sconces and traditional furniture. Customers were all resolutely locals, who live in close proximity to this pleasant Tottenham enclave: Bruce Castle (whoever he is). What I wasn’t expecting though, was some frightening ‘speed quiz’ which seemed to be electronically interactive, large screens delivering unfathomable information with a whizzy electronic soundtrack; the net result was like being a contestant on Pointless, the quizmaster being somewhat infantile, like a genuine gameshow host.
The ale choice amounted to two reversed Redemption clips, then Pale and Hopspur (obviously), served by a highly suspicious barmaid, who was initially too fearful to approach me, then watched me like a hawk as I sat and supped my half of Hopspur (£2.20) and very good it was too.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this place is one of the best pubs in N17, but equally I preferred the Beehive, finding the bright lighting and loud entertainment here a bit much.

There is a lot to like about this pub and the ever thorough PSM review needs little extra from me.The interior has had a spruce up with a light wood floor, smart furniture and two fireplaces along the right wall hinting at a previous multi room interior. It sits at the end of some terraced houses and opposite a park, and is well used by a bunch of regulars who banter amongst themselves in a friendly manner.
This close to the Tottenham Stadium means it will be rammed on match days ,and will do well financially.I went in on a non match day and found it calm, there are reasonably priced pub grub options,a flatscreen with mute BT Sports and 4 handpumps offering on my trip Five Points XPA,Redemption Pale and Hopspur (Very well kept,NBSS 4 and reasonable £4 for a 4.5%er)The ale is GBG quality,so hopefully the local CAMRA branch will agree.
Very pleased this local has been saved and preserved for all folk to enjoy in a pleasant little corner of Tottenham.Should be visited when in the area.
