Built for Taylor Walker, this is a 1930s’ pub, no doubt to cater for the area’s expansion; it’s a big, rambling roadhouse-type place, in a none-too-appealing area.
The somewhat rundown and certainly neither plush nor upmarket interior exhibits little in the way of authenticity, save for at least one freestanding brick fireplace, herringbone parquet floor and some field panelling painted white, the remainder blue. The right-hand side is a Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant – certainly not a ‘gastropub’ – where very loud music was playing, so perhaps a party was in full swing at the time of my near 9.30pm visit; a little girl could be seen dancing. There’s darts and pool, furniture is modern, décor travel-themed and Levantine, locals really a bit rough and sweary – not the place I’d want to take a child.
There’s no cask, the best option being Neck Oil, £3.50 a half, served by a slightly suspicious landlord.
This is definitely not my bag at all. Like Strongers, I too felt like I was intruding into someone’s private members’-only party and I was very glad to leave, but I’d love to know where the area’s better options are…

A 30s-style build located on a roundabout and facing retail parades either side, this operates by its own admission as a "gastropub/Turkish kitchen", although the cuisine is a mix of English and Turkish and includes roast dinners on Sundays. With more than one entrance, this likely had multiple rooms in a previous life but is now, predictably, knocked through to create, in essence, one room, albeit semi-divided into bar and dining, with a generous bar area to the left of the room and a semi-raised dining area semi-partitioned to the right. The bar area has a pool table to the left along with a couple of large flat screen TVs, showing a PL game during my visit, with the sound on, and annoyingly, both out of sync with each other, giving a disconcerting echo. Internal decor is a little tired, with a scuffed parquet floor in herringbone pattern, two-third height wood panelling (some painted over in white), worn bar counter and tables and odd bric-a-brac dotted around on windowsills as well as a trunk and a couple of violins adhered to a cork board. England flag bunting adorned the rear-facing bar (a hangover from the World Cup which finished two months prior) and no surprises with no real ale. A pint of Grimbergen Blonde was an alum-mouthed £4.90. Service was friendly, as were a couple of locals I chatted to, but as Steve N21 mentions below, there are better options in the area.

As previous reviewers have commented The Osidge Arms used to fall into that category of a traditional estate type pub with a couple of Pool tables, Darts boards, and several large TV screens for the Sky Sports and racing, with a loyal clientele of builders and local workers. Unfortunately that loyal following wasn’t enough to keep it open in these austere times and it shut down in July of this year.
However it has now reopened. But Alesonly will be a bit dismayed to hear that it has moved into the direction of the Gastro Pub.
I have to say the makeover is very good but it has firmly moved in the direction of an upmarket bar and it is now promoted as a restaurant and bar. The pool tables are gone and the area is now the dedicated dining area, and the rest of the pub is now full of sofas and chests masquerading as tables. The bar remains in the same place but is now plush and dominated by chrome taps (no real ale) and strewn with menus for a range of cocktails. Obvious was the lack of bar stools, and the clear impression is that this is now not they type of place where vertical drinking up the bar is encouraged.
Frankly I never used to utilise the old Osidge Arms to any great extent due to the lack of any decent beer and fortunately better traditional pub options were, and still are available not far away towards Southgate and Winchmore Hill. And I can’t really see myself frequenting this new guise either, but then again somehow I do not think I am the target demographic.
