I've been in a few times post pandemic. primarily for a wettner before heading down the road to The Masala Lounge, which is one of the better curry houses in the area. Sadly my experience has been that this is another pub where there has been reduced focus on the real ale front post pandemic, but I have to say last Tuesday evening was a new low.
Of the four pumps one was unbadged with a "coming possibly" label draped on it and the others had Doom Bar, London Pride and Darkstar Hop Head which I was attracted to until I saw the dreaded "coming soon" label draped on it.
So faced with the unexciting choice of Doom or Pride I asked for a pint of Pride. The young bar person duly attempted to pull a pint and after several attempts went to hand over something that looked like it had come out of a Thames Water sewer with a vinegar bouquet proceeding it before it got remotely close to me.
I just stood aghast and couldnt help myself from uttering " You are not seriously going to serve that to me are you?". Well guess what, he was. I politely declined and went for something frozen from the fizz taps instead.
I appreciate in the current climate its difficult to get knowledgeable staff behind the bar, but it would be good if Ember Inn's could invest in some training for the ones they have got.

There were two sets of four hand pumps doubling up L Pride, Hophead, Doom Bar and TT LL. Keg offering was Stella, Wingman, Coors, Stowford Press, Madri, Carling, dark fruits SB, Peroni, Guinness, Camden Hells.
Ember Inns venue so slightly set back off the road with ample car parking. It is an L-shaped venue with the bar counter following the inside shape of the venue, tiled skirt around the bar counter but otherwise carpeted interior. There are some booth tables at the rear from the entrance, that back part partially separated from the main part by an inglenook fireplace and ahead of that an upright piano against the right-hand wall. Throughout, regular tables and chairs and another couple of fireplaces. Extensive outside seating, some covered to the rear and side of the venue, partially paved and partially on grass and generally regular picnic benches. Entirely average, notwithstanding a cask offering so better than several of the venues around here. There is a psychic evening here next week, I missed that but saw it coming!

This is an Ember Inns pub (and restaurant of course) so you're going to get something half decent to drink. This one had on London Pride, Doom Bar, Adnam's Broadside, something called Ember Pale Ale (brewed by Black Sheep), and Brakspear's Bitter (£150 a half). Trays of condiments plus illustrated menus are on all the tables advertising the usual pub grub - as an example, cod & chips is £9.49.
The pub now has the usual Ember Inns hotel lounge look. It's a very large pub - a room on the left looks like it was being used as a dining room, although I'm sure I could have sat there had I wanted to. The room then wraps itself around the front and to the right of the servery. It's carpeted throughout, has a few tall tables/tall stools, but more than enough normal tables and chairs. There were muted TVs around the place, as well as fruit machines unfortunately, but that's to be expected in a pub like this. When I was in there early afternoon on Friday there were still a few people dining, plus a smattering of people enjoying a quiet drink.
It obviously lacks the intimacy and homeliness of a traditional pub, but at least it's a survivor even if it's now a member of the corporate pub and dining club.
