This pub dates from the mid-19th century, originally sited around 50m to the south, the current prefabricated box courtesy of Watney’s dating from 1970, built to cater for the surrounding estate.
The interior is a two-roomed affair, the one to the south home to a darts match at the time of my Wednesday 9.20pm visit. My near empty chosen room was carpeted, then a burgundy and white colour scheme, pool table, raised performance area with a loud boom box with flashing lights and home to a scruffy bike, comprehensibly out-scruffed by the appalling state of the torn brown vinyl banquettes and traditional though neglected tables, the one next to me home to a discarded newspaper. There are multiple TVs showing unwatched football in silence, games machines and constituent flags of the UK hanging from the ceiling. Along with an air of utter despondency, the painfully - but nonetheless understandably few - customers were a fair bit older than me and very blokey, one wearing a Millwall shirt, of all things.
There’s no cask, me opting for a half of Stella at £2.60, served by a very surly barmaid who then told me that minimum card spend was £10; this isn’t legal as any business wishing to impose charging conditions must by law clearly display their terms of trade; I could have refused to pay and walked, but by chance I did have a green drinking voucher on me, which was lucky for the rancid old bag.
This is a seriously poor pub, one of the worst three in the borough of Tower Hamlets and one of the most dispiriting pub visits I’ve ever undertaken; if you’re out this way, the places to visit are the Ship, Ferry House and George.

This is one of those pubs that as you walk up to it you just know that it won’t have any real ale on. And I was right, with just John Smith’s and the standard lagers available. There was no sign of any food at Wednesday lunchtime.
The pub itself is a square block and looks for all the world like a post-war estate pub, a view reinforced by the tower blocks looming over it. The shabby and uninspiring exterior is matched by the characterless interior. Actually, the carpet is in pretty good nick, but there’s no decor unless you count a Union Flag on one of the walls, and a Foster’s advert on another. Seating is plastic covered banquettes and wooden chairs, together with rectangular wooden tables. Other features are a red baize pool table and banks of coloured spotlights on the ceiling, indicating a dance or music related venue – in fact karaoke is advertised. There was some pop music radio station blaring out.
But the service was friendly enough, and the handful of locals in there seemed content enough. So, although it’s not a pub that I’m likely to return to, I’m glad that it’s there for the locals to enjoy.
