Cask was TT LL and Boltmaker. Keg was Fosters, K1664, Guinness, Moretti, Fosters, Cruz, original SB, Stella and Neck Oil.
This is a lively corner venue with some outside seating, but inside it is bare boarded with the island bar counter providing the focal point for chatter amongst locals perched on unbacked bar stools around both sides of the counter. On the right-hand side there are a few tall tables that lend themselves to standing and leading into a rear room with a few small tables and small stools that were totally occupied on my visit. To the left of the entrance and some small tables along the front is a more sedate lounge like seating area with a leather studded banquette along the left-hand wall and serving regular tables. There is a rear room called the Butterfields Lounge with a large table around which a large group were perched on my visit. Several TVs were showing the build-up to evening sporting action, and a rock soundtrack filled the venue no doubt ahead of live commentary later. Nice location and a nice lively venue.

Overlooking Nightingale Green, this is a grade II-listed mid-19th century pub, still with one of two Courage cockerels straddling one of the pub signs, the original name – The Nightingale – to the corner parapet, topped with a bold gold painted finial. The cream and acid green colour scheme and scruffy exterior disappeared around 2016, replaced by one which is now no longer so alarming; cream with a tasteful green, ‘Bancha’ on the Farrow & Ball colour chart, a clear indication of trendification; the ‘etched’ glass presumably arrived at the same time.
Unshackling from the Great British Pubs’ chain has resulted in a recently rebuilt interior and gastro colour scheme, so the previous reviews probably no longer apply; even the previous GBP interior looked cocktail-orientated. There’s also a function room called ‘Mrs. Butterfield’s Lounge’, available for the likes of, ‘business lunches’ and ‘book clubs’, a must for the new breed of locals?
Most of the pub’s interior can be seen on their website, but otherwise there’s a modern boarded floor, new and rather cheap-looking bar array, the pot shelf topped with an ugly UV insect zapper. The colour scheme is bottle green to three-quarter height, then off-white to a similar ceiling. Furniture is conventional, with tan vinyl upholstered banquettes. Light fittings were mixed and décor was thin, one item of note being a framed montage made from multi-coloured shotgun cartridges in an attractive wainscoted snug, with log burning stove and pretty etched ‘Nightingale’ mirror above; otherwise, a framed West Ham shirt was on display, along with a black and white photo of Bobby Moore. I had made the mistake of arriving on a DJ night with deafening dance anthems, played by a rather sweary jockey, rendering conversation impossible; several TVs showed the football in silence. There were a small number of older more traditional locals in, comprehensibly outnumbered by young drinkers, a great many spilling out onto the slip road.
There are now just two ales: Pride and Landlord at a very reasonable £2.40 a half, served by a barmaid who had to be told three times what I wanted, such was the cacophony; there’s irony in here somewhere.
With the lack of cask variety and awful din, this isn’t a great pub, though the local Club 18-30 brigade seem to like it and good luck to ‘em. But if I’m in the area again, you’ll find me next door in the Duke.

Located in the back streets a short walk from Snaresbrook tube is the striking Nightingale, a listed building and painted remarkably green. The interior is spread out over four distinct areas coming off a central bar and the décor is comfy and welcoming, akin to an extension of one’s living room with (yet more) green upholstered banquettes, stools and curtains. We settled in the snug area next to the fire (forgot to see if it was real or not) and I’d have been happy to do a good shift on the ales here. Four were on over the five pubs though I shamefully neglected to make a note of them, I do recall, however, they were mainly from mid-sized regionals. Quality was good though prices were a little on the steep side. Pub grub is offered and I would have been tempted had I not had other crawlees to consider. TV was showing the Six Nations and there were some old brewery mirrors for decoration. I liked this one and would happily make the effort to call again.
